EDINBURG, TEXAS – Whitecaps FC 2 (4W-12L-7D) battled Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (7W-10L-6D) to a 1-1 draw at H-E-B Park on a hot and gusty Saturday evening behind Deklan Wynne’s first-half goal and a steady performance in net from Sean Melvin.

Wynne gave WFC2 the advantage in the 23rd minute, before RGV FC midfielder TJ Casner scored the equalizer in the second frame as the two Western Conference rivals split points for the second time this month.

Goalkeeper Sean Melvin made three saves for the ‘Caps, including an 88th-minute stop versus Toros captain Eric Bird from up close to preserve the hard-earned road point for Vancouver.

The ‘Caps went ahead in the 23rd minute when Marco Bustos laid a through ball onto Gloire Amanda’s path along the right lane, which the 18-year old forward then directed across the box. With striker Thomas Sanner drawing defenders in front of net, Wynne banged in the goal from the other side for the 1-0 lead.

WFC2 blanked the Toros for the first 70 minutes of the match, until Casner drew the home side level. Bird floated a cross to the left post, where fullback Justin Bilyeu made a back pass to a trailing Casner for the one-timer finish, knotting the score at 1-1.

Whitecaps FC 2 now continue their Texas road swing with a visit to San Antonio FC on Wednesday, August 23. Kickoff at Toyota Field is at 5:30 p.m. PT
