Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA – Three games against prestigious competition await a UVic Vikes women’s field hockey travelling squad as their pre-season preparations kick into high gear.

Beginning the trip with a game against Harvard University on August 25, the Vikes will then play Brown University on August 26 and Yale University on August 28.

After not going on the trip last year, this will be a resumption of the team’s annual trip to play NCAA competition that they have been making since 2009.

Last Time Out

Two victories and a loss was the outcome the last time the team headed south of the border in 2015. Wins of 2-1 and 4-1 over Brown and Yale respectively were followed by a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a Harvard team that finished fourth in the Ivy League conference that year.

The trip will be the beginning point of a Vikes season that gets underway with a 2016-17 U SPORTS championship rematch on September 16, against the UBC Thunderbirds.

By The Numbers

12: Of their 16 games against Harvard, Yale and Brown the Vikes have registered 12 victories
30: Their silver medal in Toronto last year was the Vikes 30th medal at the national level

Coach’s Take
Lynne Beecroft, Vikes head coach

“We have a strong leadership group and they are going to have a big responsibility when we are in Boston to ensure that everybody comes together, meshes into one so that when we are playing important games we are doing it collectively.”

“The Ivy League schools start later than the other American schools. So like us they are just starting to build.”

“For us at this point it’s not really about winning, it’s about putting people into positions and seeing how they will react.”
