Victoria, BC- Team White defeated Team Blue 8-5 as defenceman Jeremy Masella led his club offensively with five points (2g-3a) in the yearly Intra-Squad game.
Masella, who is headed into his sophomore campaign, recorded two assists in the opening period and added a pair of markers in the middle frame. The product of Phoenix, AZ capped-off his performance in the third period when he earned his third assist and fifth point of the night. Team White’s Eric Florchuk and Jared Legien both tallied twice, while the club’s other goals were scored by Nico Marini and Reid Lindsay.
Team Blue’s Igor Martynov, a Belarusian forward who was taken 30th overall in the 2017 CHL Import Draft, completed his hat-trick with a highlight-reel breakaway goal in the final frame. Team Blue’s remaining markers were registered by fellow import Yan Khomenko, who was acquired in a trade from Moose Jaw earlier this summer, and newly-signed blueliner Kaden Reinders.
Dylan Myskiw, Brady Parker, and Connor Martin split duties for Team White and stopped 28 of the 33 shots fired their way. Team Blue netminders Dean McNabb and Brock Gould combined for 21 saves on the 29 pucks they faced.
The Royals will begin pre-season play this weekend with contests against the Kamloops Blazers and Kelowna Rockets on Friday and Saturday. The game in Kamloops will be held at the McArthur Island Sports Centre and will start at 7:00 p.m., whereas the contest in Kelowna will take place at Prospera Centre with puck drop set for 7:05 p.m.
