Kamloops, BC- The Victoria Royals were defeated 5-3 by the Kamloops Blazers on Friday night at McArthur Island Sports Centre.


Victoria went with a mixture of nine rookies and 11 veterans in their line-up.  Kamloops countered with 10 veterans and 10 rookies.


The Blazers’ Garrett Pilon recorded the game winner in the third period. Kamloops’ Erik Miller registered two goals, while Carson Denomie and Jermaine Loewen also scored.


The Royals received two of their three goals, while on the powerplay, from veteran Jared Legien and rookie Dino Kambeitz. The recently signed Legien rounded out the scoring for the visitors with his second marker of the contest.


Victoria’s returning goaltender Dylan Myskiw played the first half of the contest and stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced. Rookie netminder Brock Gould took over for the second half of the game and made 21 saves on the 24 pucks directed his way. Kamloops’ Dylan Ferguson turned away 25 of the 28 shots he faced.


The Royals went 2/5=40.0% on the powerplay, while the Blazers held a 2/6=33.3% mark.


Victoria scratched 20-year-olds Chaz Reddekopp, Tyler Soy, and Regan Nagy along with veterans Matthew Phillips, Dante Hannoun, Ryan Peckford, Ralph Jarratt, Griffen Outhouse and rookies Noah Lamb and Dean McNabb.


The Royals will continue their pre-season road trip tomorrow in Kelowna with a contest vs. the Rockets at 7:05 p.m.
