September 10, 2017 Nanaimo, BC – For the second weekend in a row, the Victoria Spartans 9-M Bantam football team defeated the Nanaimo Redmen, this time on their own turf, defeating the home side 38-8.
After defeating the Redmen last weekend 33-8, the black and gold would battle to a similar result. With rookie QB Cole Junghans under centre, the Spartans would dominate the Redmen in the Sunday afternoon tilt. Junghans, throwing for 3 TD’s in the game, would one of many player standouts in the game for the Spartan side in an all-team effort.
Owen Cheng would be the recipient of 2 Junghan’s TD tosses, and would carry the ball 45 yards through secondary traffic for his third TD in an outstanding performance. Blake Stolth and Mike Kunz would also contribute to the team cause with a TD each. Kunz, with his second TD in as many games, would be tested in his resolve, having to shrug off two defensive safeties, not to mention climbing a ladder to tip the ball to himself on the way to a 55 yard TD.
Rookie Kicker Keegan Quinn Young would kick good on five converts, and kick a 40 yard field goal in only his second ever career attempt.
Defensively, the Spartans where equally sharp. Not only were they able to hold the Redmen to only eight points all game, but more importantly were able to keep the Redmen’s defensive side on the field, keeping the momentum in the Spartan’s favour.
The defense was anchored by veteran Caleb Carrier and newcomer Bronson Pfieffer who would record his first career interception at the corner position.
All in all a great road team win for the now 2-0 Spartans !
The Spartans return to Westhills Stadium September 17th against the Richmond Raiders in a 12:30 start.
