Langley, BC- The Victoria Royals erased a 2-0 deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback as they were bested 3-2 by the Vancouver Giants on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre.
The Royals went with a mixture of youth and experience in their line-up as they dressed nine rookies and 11 veterans. The Giants countered with 11 rookies and nine veterans.
Vancouver tallied the contest’s opening two goals. Bowen Byram recorded the game winner late in the third stanza. The Giants’ other goals were scored by Jack Flaman and Milos Roman.
Victoria rookie Dino Kambeitz opened the team’s scoring in the second period when he buried a rebound past Vancouver netminder Todd Scott. Ryan Peckford finished off a great feed from Regan Nagy as he fired a shot of the crossbar and into the net to tie the game at 2-2 in the third frame.
Both teams played two goalies and switched them out mid-way through the second period. Victoria’s Dean McNabb made 12 saves on 14 shots, while Brock Gould stopped eight of the nine shots he faced. Vancouver’s Todd Scott and Ryan Kubic combined to stop 27 of 29 shots directed their way.
Victoria went 1/4=25.0% on the powerplay, while Vancouver was 1/2=50.0%.
The Royals scratched 20-year-olds Chaz Reddekopp and Tyler Soy along with veterans Griffen Outhouse, Ralph Jarratt, Scott Walford, Matthew Phillips and rookie Hunter Arps.
The Royals will conclude their pre-season tomorrow in Langley, BC with a contest vs. the Prince George Cougars as part of the Giants Pre-Season Tournament. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
