VICTORIA – In a tightly contested game the UVic Vikes men’s rugby team couldn’t find the try-line when they needed to the most in a BC Premier League season opening loss to Westshore RFC.

The game, in Colwood on Sep. 9, was played on a slick surface that favoured the formidable Valhallians, allowing the team from the west shore to deny the speedy Vikes valuable possession.

Outside Half Aaron Hersant led the way on the scoreboard for the Vikes, recording: a try, a penalty and a conversion. Also scoring on the day were Ethan Blenkhorn and second-year Vike Spencer Cooper.

Holding the lead within the final five minutes of play, the Vikes were unable to keep a persistent Valhallians attack from scoring what would be the game winning try late in the contest.

A valiant Vikes team tried to rally after giving up the late score but ultimately came up just short in their pursuit of the win.

The loss kicks off the 2017-18 BC Premier League season for the Vikes but the team will have the chance to claw their way back to the .500 mark when they take on their rivals from James Bay in a game played at Wallace Stadium on Sep. 16.

It was a young Vikes team that took the field and after the game Vikes head coach Doug Tate pointed to rookies Ethan Blenkhorn and Logan Martin-Feek as two players that played impressively in their first game wearing the Vikes blue and gold.
