EATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Director of Player Development Andy McKay announced today the Mariners Minor League Awards for the 2017 season:

 

  • OF Ian Miller (AA Arkansas/AAA Tacoma) received the Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League Hitter of the Year.
  • RH Nick Neidert (High-A Modesto/AA Arkansas) received the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
  • INF Chris Mariscal (High-A Modesto/AA Arkansas) received the Alvin Davis “Mr. Mariner” Award.
  • INF Jordan Cowan (High-A Modesto) received the Edgar Martinez PTPA Award.
  • RHP Ljay Newsome (A Clinton) received the “60 ft. 6 in. Club” Award.
  • OF Dimas Ojeda (A Clinton) received the Dan Wilson Minor League Community Service Award.
  • Manager Cesar Nicolas (DSL Mariners) received the Dave Henderson Minor League Staff Member of the Year Award.

 

Miller, Neidert, Mariscal, Cowan, Newsome, Ojeda and Nicolas will be honored in a pre-game ceremony at Safeco Field prior to the Mariners game vs. the Athletics on Friday, September 22.

 

 

THE KEN GRIFFEY JR. MINOR LEAGUE HITTER OF THE YEAR

Miller, 25, hit .307 (157×512) with 85 runs scored, 22 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs 35 RBI, 33 walks and 43 stolen bases in 124 games combined between Arkansas and Tacoma. He set career highs in nearly every offensive category, including runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, average, slugging percentage (.393) and OPS (.748). Miller also led all Mariners farmhands in stolen bases, while ranking 2nd in hits and 4th in average. Among all minor league players in 2017, Miller ranked 12th with 43 stolen bases and dating back to 2015 his 142 stolen bases are 3rd-most in the minors. Miller, who represented Arkansas in the Texas League All-Star game and was recently named to the Texas League Post-Season All-Star team, began the season with Arkansas batting .326 (157×512) with 63 runs scored, 18 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs, 29 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 83 games (April 6-July 21). He finished in a tie for the Texas League batting title, while also ranking among league leaders in stolen bases (2nd/30) and on-base percentage (2nd/.382). He was promoted to Tacoma on July 22 and made his AAA debut that night vs. Sacramento, going 2-for-4 with 1 run scored. He hit safely in 33 of 41 games with the Rainiers, including a season-high 12-game hitting streak, July 22Aug. 3 (.426/20x47x9 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, HBP, 2 BB, 3 SB).  Miller was selected by the Mariners 14th round in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Wagner College in Staten Island, NY.

 

THE JAMIE MOYER MINOR LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Neidert, 20 turns 21 on Nov. 20, went 11-6 with a 3.45 ERA (49 ER, 127.2 IP) combined between Modesto and Arkansas in 2017. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound righty limited opponents to a .261 (128×491) average, while walking 22 and striking out 122 in 127.2 innings. Among Mariners minor league pitchers, Neidert finished 2nd in wins (11) and strikeouts (122) and 3rd in ERA (3.45). Neidert opened the season with Modesto, going 10-3 with a 2.76 ERA (32 ER, 104.1 IP) in 19 starts before being promoted to Arkansas on July 19. In 6 starts with Arkansas, Neidert went 1-3 with a 6.56 ERA (17 ER, 23.1 IP). He was placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season on August 19 with a deep bone bruise after being hit by a line drive. Neidert represented the Nuts in the California League All-Star team and was recently named California League Pitcher of the Year. Neidert was the Mariners 2nd round selection, the 60th overall pick, in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Peachtree Ridge High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

 

THE ALVIN DAVIS “MR. MARINER” AWARD

Mariscal, 24, received the Alvin Davis “Mr. Mariner” Award for his exemplary play and leadership skills both on and off the field this season. He spent the majority of the season with Modesto, but also appeared in 40 games with Arkansas, July 22-Sept. 4. Overall he hit .285 (137×480) with 67 runs scored, 16 doubles, 8 triples, 8 home runs, 63 RBI, 58 walks and 6 stolen bases in 125 games combined between Modesto and Arkansas. Mariscal appeared in 85 games with Modesto, ranking among the California League leaders in on-base percentage (2nd/.392) and average (7th/.305). He was the Mariners 14th round selection in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft of Fresno State University.

 

THE EDGAR MARTINEZ PTPA (PRODUCTIVE TEAM PLATE APPEARANCE) AWARD

Cowan, 22, received the Edgar Martinez PTPA (Productive Team Plate Appearance) Award after being recognized as the best hitter in the Mariners organization that embodied the Control the Zone philosophy, instilling a team approach at the plate instead of an individual approach. Cowan reached base safely in 99 of 120 games (w/AB) with Modesto, batting .271 (127×468) with 67 runs scored, 20 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 39 RBI, 4 HBP, 50 walks and 18 stolen bases. Cowan was selected in the 37th round by the Mariners in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Kentlake (WA) High School.
