VICTORIA – The opening line on the front page of the website is “a golf tournament like no other” and this is just the case for the Golf for Kids Charity Classic. This unique event that supports a variety of recognized children’s charities has been announced as the beneficiary of all donations from the upcoming Toronto Raptors pre-season training camp happening Sept. 26-29.

The culmination of Canada’s only NBA team’s pre-season visit to the University of Victoria campus is the Sept. 28 intrasquad game held on at 7:00 p.m. in the CARSA Performance Gym.

“We are delighted to be hosting the Toronto Raptors on our campus and our community has already shown a high-level of interest in the event,” said Clint Hamilton, Director, Vikes Athletics and Recreation. “It is tremendous that one of the legacies of the Raptors’ visit to Victoria will be a direct link to the Golf for Kids Charity Classic and by virtue of that all proceeds from the intrasquad game are going to benefit numerous, recognized charities in our region that are focused on helping and supporting children.”

The Golf for Kids Charity Classic started in 1999. That year the tournament raised over $14,000 and has since grown to include over 200 participants, 120 volunteers and over 100 sponsors which allowed the event to surpass the $5 million mark in funds raised at the 19th edition last Saturday, Sept. 9 at Bear Mountain.

“The connection between the Raptors, UVic and the Golf for Kids event is just awesome,” said Dale Douglas, Tournament Co-chair for the Golf for Kids Charity Classic. “We recognize the impact that the Vikes have already established in this community and now, through the Raptors intrasquad game, Golf for Kids will be able to continue to expand support to even more recognized charities that benefit children in our community. We are humbled by the continued desire for organizations, like the Vikes and Raptors, to choose to support the Golf for Kids Charity Classic and look forward to sharing with our community the enjoyment of having the Raptors in Victoria.”

Any support for Golf for Kids is infinitely amplified as the charity golf tournament directly supports a number of charities including their feature charity, the Help Fill a Dream Foundation. The list of charities Golf for Kids supports seems to be endless but does include some well-known ones including the Pacific Training Centre for the Blind, CFAX Santa Anonymous Society, Boys & Girls Club, Victoria Brain Injury Society, Scouts Canada, Raise-A-Reader, Canucks Autism Network, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, KidSport, Vikes Junior Golf Tour, Ride to Conquer Cancer, MS Foundation, TLC Fund for Kids, Child Find BC, Special Olympics and the African Preschool Society.
