Calgary, Alta. – Western Hockey League Commissioner Ron Robison announced today that Taylor Rocca has been appointed WHL Manager, Communications. In his new role, Rocca will be responsible to determine and execute the WHL communications and content strategy.
A 29-year-old native of Calgary, Alta., Rocca joined the WHL Office in September 2016 as WHL Coordinator, Communications. He takes over the position after Corey St. Laurent departed in June after three years with the WHL Communications department.
“It’s an incredible honour and privilege to have been selected for this role with the Western Hockey League,” Rocca said. “I’m eager for the opportunity to continue building the WHL brand to new and exciting levels across Western Canada and the United States.”
In his role, Rocca will be responsible for managing all aspects of the WHL Communications department, including the WHL Online Network, WHL.ca, WHL Live and all WHL social media channels. He will also serve as the primary contact for media relations for outlets across Western Canada and the United States. Key within Rocca’s role will be the promotion of the WHL Scholarship program and pursuing continued growth of the WHL’s relationship with the Canada West university hockey program.
“We are very pleased to have Taylor take on an elevated role with the Western Hockey League,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “We believe Taylor’s experience as a former journalist and a graduate of the WHL Internship program makes him ideally suited to manage our communications department and deliver key messages regarding the WHL brand.”
Rocca is a graduate of the WHL Internship program, having completed a summer internship from May through August 2010.
Prior to joining the WHL Office in September 2016, he earned degrees in Recreation, Sports and Tourism (University of Alberta) and Journalism (Thompson Rivers University). From 2012 to 2016, he worked as a journalist, spending time with The Hockey News before covering the WHL’s Kootenay ICE as the sports editor for the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.
Brock Boot, WHL Coordinator, Video & Creative Services, remains an integral part of the WHL Communications department, providing his expertise and outstanding talents in video production, graphic design and more.
Along with the appointment of Rocca, the WHL Communications department is pleased to welcome Robert Murray as WHL Coordinator, Communications. Murray joins the WHL Office after spending four years as a sports reporter for Postmedia at Fort McMurray Today.
