The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Kamloops Blazers 6-2 on Friday night in their home opener at Prospera Place.
Kyle Topping got things started 3:25 into the first period as he notched the first goal of the 2017-2018 regular season. Assists went to Liam Kindree and Nolan Foote. Tomas Soustal stretched the Rockets lead with his first of the season. Jack Cowell and Cal Foote assisted on Soustal’s marker and the Rockets took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Kole Lind pulled the Rockets ahead by three just 36 seconds into the second period with newly named Captain Cal Foote collecting his second assist of the contest, and Kyle Topping also adding an assist. Topping then scored his second of the night and the Rockets led 4-0. Kole Lind and Will Kushniryk collected assists. Nolan Foote banked the puck off of Liam Kindree’s skate for Kindree’s first ever WHL goal. Kole Lind added an assist to that one as well. Jack Cowell scored a power play marker before the period was out and the Rockets led 6-0 heading into the final frame. Cal Foote added another assist on Cowell’s goal with Tomas Soustal getting the secondary helper.
It took until 6:36 remaining in the final frame but Kamloops managed to squeak one past Rockets goaltender Brodan Salmond. Nolan Kneen would pot one more for Kamloops but that would be all the offence the Blazers could muster as the Rockets take the first meeting of the season 6-2.
Brodan Salmond stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced as both he and the Rockets improve to 1-0-0-0 on the season.
Tomas Soustal (1G, 1A), Kole Lind (1G, 2A), Kyle Topping (2G, 1A), Cal Foote (3A), Liam Kindree (1G, 1A), and Nolan Foote (2A) all enjoyed multi-point nights.
The Rockets and Blazers are right back in action the tomorrow, Saturday, September 23rd, at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops to wrap up the opening weekend. Puck drop is at 7:00pm.
