VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes men’s rugby team can put one in the win column for their 2017-18 BC Premier League season after they defeated the Nanaimo Hornets in Nanaimo on Sep. 30.
A myriad of Vikes put their name on the scoresheet in the 51-37 victory. Cathal Long scored two tries while Liam Mahon, Carson O’Sullivan, Ethan Hager, Macbryan Bos and Jesse Burns each added a try apiece. Brennig Prevost rounded out the scoring for the Vikes with a try, four conversions and a successful penalty.
“We played well in turnover ball situations and when under pressure,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate of his team’s winning effort.
It was Nanaimo who came out of the gates hot as the team from up-island jumped out to a 24-8 lead early in the first half. Once the Vikes got going they really got going however, storming their way back into the game to lead 34-29 at the halftime break.
The Vikes defence was the story of the second half as the team was able to hold the Hornets to just eight points while scoring 28 of their own.
The win bumps the Vikes record up to 1-3-0 on the year and they currently sit in eight place in the Premier League. The team will get the chance to improve upon that spot when they host the Meralomas on Oct. 14 at Wallace Field.
