Prince Albert, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders gave the Memorial Cup host Regina Pats all they could handle on Friday night.

However, Josh Mahura tallied the overtime winner to lift the Pats (4-4-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over the Raiders (3-3-1-0) at the Art Hauser Centre.

In the first, the Raiders penalty kill was on display. The special teams unit killed off three penalties in the frame, including a double minor right before the end of the frame.

Early in the second, the Pats took the lead. Matt Bradley found the open cage through a crowd in front when he collected a rebound at the side of the Raiders’ goal.

The Raiders tied the game less than three minutes into the third. Spencer Moe broke into the Pats’ zone on a two-on-one rush with Justin Nachbaur. The Calgary product held onto the puck and snapped it off the cross bar and in to tie the game at 1-1.

That score held, sending the game to overtime. At the 1:55 mark, the trailing Mahura took a pass from Bradley and squeaked his shot through Raiders goaltender Curtis Meger to give the Pats the win.

Meger was strong again for the Raiders, albeit in a losing effort. The 19-year-old goalie stopped 31 shots fired his way to earn the game’s first star. Tyler Brown, his counterpart for Regina, made 25 saves for the win.

Up next for the Raiders is a road trip to Brandon to take on the Wheat Kings (5-2-0-1) on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s game starts at 6:30 p.m., while Sunday’s faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
