With just three meets left to go before the Vikes host the best in the west for the Canada West Championships on Nov. 24-26 at the Saanich Commonwealth Pool, the meet was an important one for the team to check in on their progress.
“As it was the first meet of the season, we were focussed on racing hard and testing each swimmer, but having been working hard and not resting at all for the meet, most were predictably not at their fastest,” said Vikes assistant coach Ryan Clouston. “Everyone worked hard, tested the skills they’ve been working on and discovered what they need to work harder on in the coming weeks and months.”
While ten different athletes finished their race with a spot on the podium it was a first-year Vike that shone the brightest at the meet.
Zachary Dumas, from Kitimat, B.C., was the lone event winner on the day for the Vikes, capturing the win in his best event, the 400-metre Individual Medley.
Dumas also set personal best times in both the 100-metre Backstroke and the 200-metre Breaststroke.
Up next for the team is the NRST SC Meet, hosted in Nanaimo, B.C. from Oct. 28-29.
As for this past weekend, the signs are encouraging for a Vikes team that continues to build momentum as it nears the heart of their fall schedule. “Most Vikes had a pretty good day of racing,” said Clouston.
