October 28, 2017   Victoria, BC (ISN) – The James Bay Bays rugby side let slip away late a hard-fought, defensive, 17-9 decision to the UBCOB Ravens of Vancouver Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Field in BC Rugby Premiership action.

The Bays’ Elliot Mitrou would be the lone scorer for the home side, scoring all nine of his team’s points on a 3-5 penalty kick performance.

The Bays, sitting in fourth place in the standings going into the match, looked to hand the league-leading Ravens their first loss of the season. The Ravens, flying high this season, have to date outscored their opposition by a 151-point differential over six games so far this season.

Both sides would play a well-fought game from the opening kickoff. James Bay would strike twice in the first half, content to split the sticks on the boot of Mitrou to take a 6-0 lead. The Ravens would finally find a reply late on a successful penalty kick of their own to pull closer, trailing 6-3 at the half.

Mitrou would give his side a 9-3 lead early in the second half before a resilient Ravens club would find an answer to the earlier James Bay defensive prowess. UBCOB Sean Hase would outpace the Bays side to pull his team ahead 10-9 on a rare penalty try with fifteen minutes remaining in the game.

Surviving a Raven’s offensive push to forge ahead in the score, James Bay would get one last chance to run the field with the ball. Taking the ball out of their own end, a James Bay chip and chase effort to gain better ball position just inside the Raven’s end of the field with time all but expired would be blocked and picked up by import product Aaron McLelland, running half the distance of the field untouched to return the ball for the try and seal the 17-9 win.

With the disappointing loss, James Bay now 4-1, falls to fifth place in a hotly contested top-five fight in the standings. The UBCOB Ravens remain undefeated with a 7-0 record.

In the warm up match, the seventh place James Bay Bays Premier Reserve side dominated their eighth place Ravens counterpart, defeating the visitors 47-7 in a lopsided affair.
