VICTORIA – The UVic Vikes men’s rugby team finished off a perfect weekend with their second-straight win of 72-0 in a thrashing of the UBC Okanagan Heat on Oct. 29 in Kelowna.

“It was a very satisfying weekend that sees us qualify for the National Championships in Guelph,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate. “The boys played a fast paced game and there were a lot of very good team tries.”

As Tate mentioned, the win secures the second berth from Western Canada for the upcoming University National Championships that are being hosted in Guelph, ON from Nov. 16-19. The Vikes join the UBC T-Birds as the two teams that will represent Western Canada at the tournament.

Six different players scored tries for the Vikes in the contest and third-year Vike Aaron Hersant was clutch in the kicking game, knocking through six conversions.

After the match, Tate pointed to Thomas Di Fiore and Gradyn Bowd as two players that stood out in the game.

The Vikes outscored their opponents 144-0 in the two games they played over the weekend, qualifying for nationals in style.

Next up for the team is a return to the B.C. Premier League where they will host the Castaway Wanderers at Wallace Field on Nov. 4
