Alberta Pandas/Golden Bears win Huskie Open

    SASKATOON – The University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas took the men’s and women’s titles at the annual University of Saskatchewan-hosted Huskie Open Saturday in Education Gym.

     

    The Alberta Pandas was crowned the top team with 47 points on the women’s side, while the Golden Bears accumulated 73 points to win the men’s crown.

     

    Saskatchewan’s men’s team finished second in the standings, while the Huskies finished third on the women’s side.

     

    The Calgary Dinos finished third on the men’s side, followed by the Regina Cougars. The Cougars finished second in the women’s standings and the Dinos fourth.

    Saskatchewan wrestlers combined for nine medals at the tournament – three gold, one silver and six bronze.

    Four-time Canada West gold medalist Josh Bodnarchuk captured one of the gold medals in the 61-kg weight class for the Huskies, while Alex Schell struck gold for the women in the 48-kg class. Taylor Follensbee added the final gold in the women’s 82-kg.

     

    On the women’s side Laryssa Barry (59-kg) secured the silver medal, while Ali Mcphee (67-kg) won bronze.  Ayobami Peluola (65-kg), Trevor Bannerman (72-kg), Hunter Lee (90-kg), Noah Bertholet (100-kg) and Kalin Langford (120-kg) won bronze for the Huskie men.

     

    Also competing for the Huskies were:  Alyx Paulson (4th, 51-kg), Carly Baker (4th, 55-kg), Trent Siemens (4th, 76-kg), Liam Graham (4th, 100-kg), Mackenzie Alexson (5th, 63-kg), Hilary Palchewich (5th, 72-kg), Julian Klinger (5th, 82-kg), Remington Tschetter (5th, 57-kg), Jon Risto (5th, 68-kg), Micah Heide (5th, 72-kg), Jacob Fritz (6th, 61-kg), Reid Smith (6th, 72-kg), Tyler Bently (6th, 82-kg) and Austin Shopa (5th, 90-kg),

     

    Golden Bear Melvin Arciaga was named the male most outstanding wrestler at the tournament, while the Huskies’ Follensbee was named the most outstanding female wrestler. 

    The weekend also featured a Saskatchewan-Alberta Dual on Friday night.

    The Huskies will hit the mat next in Edmonton at the Golden Bear Open January 12-13.
