The Swift Current Broncos entered tonight’s matchup against the Brandon Wheat Kings having won four of their previous five games with the only loss coming to the Wheat Kings back on November 19th. Swift Current was all over Brandon in this one but it was the visiting team in yellow and black that prevailed 3-2 in overtime.

Tyler Steenbergen did what he does best, scoring his WHL leading 32nd goal of the season on a Broncos man advantage 5:57 into the opening frame. The Sylvan Lake, AB native crept out to the right faceoff dot and rifled a perfectly placed high wrist shot by Wheat Kings goaltender Logan Thompson.

Brandon got it back as Baron Thompson redirected a Braden Schneider shot in front to draw even with Swift.

Two minutes later, Caiden Daley took a centering pass from Stelio Mattheos to make it 2-1 Brandon.

Swift Current invaded the Wheat Kings end of the ice for much of the second period, committing 17 shots on goal compared to eight for Brandon but Thompson was consistent in the crease.

The Broncos top ranked power play unit went to work in the third period as the WHL’s leading point scorer Aleksi Heponiemi one-timed in his 17th goal of the season and 60th point overall to tie this battle up 2-2.

Overtime was needed for the fourth time in five games and this time the cards didn’t fall in the Broncos favour. Wheat Kings forward Ty Lewis skated down the left wing and lasered a shot that beat Logan Flodell off the far post and in to send Swift Current to a 3-2 loss.

Shots on goal were 48-27 in favour of Swift Current. Special teams play was excellent for the Broncos as they scored twice on six power play chances while shutting out the Wheat Kings power play, going five-for-five on the penalty kill.

Heponiemi’s point streak has now reached 16 games, having amassed 40 points (13g-27a) during that span.
