Jessica Vance Huskies Goalie

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies evened the weekend series with the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars with a 2-0 shutout victory Saturday night at Rutherford Rink.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 8-5-1. Mount Royal falls to 4-10-0. A night earlier, Mount Royal shut out the Huskies by the same score.

In the first period, fourth-year Chelsea Broadhead received a pass in the slot and quickly passed it to third-year Courtney Cormack who made no mistake to rip it past the out-of-position Cougar goalie, first-year Emily Severson.

After no scoring in the second, third-year Morgan Willoughby took a shot from the blue line after receiving a cross-ice pass from third-year Emma Nutter mid-way through the third. Willoughby’s shot snuck by heavy traffic in front of Severson to squeak by the Cougar goalie.

Second-year goalie Jessica Vance made 31 saves in the shutout for the Huskies, while Severson stopped 26 at the other end of the ice. It is Vance’s second shutout of the season.

The Huskies meet provincial rival the Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series next weekend, while the Cougars face the Alberta Pandas in a home-and-home series of their own. It will be the final weekend of women’s hockey for the first half of the season
