UBC Okanagan Fall To Dinos

CALGARY – The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s volleyball team fell on the road against the Calgary Dinos, 3-0 on Friday night. It was the second shutout win of the weekend for the Dinos, who managed to halt the Heat’s climb up the Canada West standings before the December break in the conference schedule.

Consistency on offence and shut-down defence were the keys to Calgary’s success on Friday night, as they finished well ahead in both hitting percentage and in blocks. The Heat attack couldn’t find their rhythm, or get around the Calgary blockers enough to make a run against a strong Calgary side.

First Set: (25-13)

After the Heat got the scoring started in the opening set, the Dinos took over and strung together points and were well ahead at 14-7 after a four-point run. At the media break, Calgary were ahead 16-8.

After the technical time-out the Heat were unable to score consecutive points, and the Dinos were able to survive trading points and stringing together a run late, before a kill from Calvin Siebert sealed the first set win.

Second Set: (25-22)

Once again the Heat were ahead early in the second, before the Dinos tied it up at 4 and 5 points apiece. A three-point run put the home side ahead 10-8, and they held on to that two-point lead into the technical time-out, ahead 16-14.

The Heat were able to pull within a couple of points a number of times late in the set, but a three-point run to go ahead 23-18 was enough for the Dinos to stay in control, leading to a kill from Alex Bader putting them ahead 2-0.

Third Set: (27-25)

The Heat and the Dinos essentially traded points through the entirety of the early third set, as the Dinos were always ahead but couldn’t stretch their lead beyond four points. After back-to-back points to go ahead 13-10, the Dinos held on after trading even more points to stay ahead 16-13 into the break.

After the media time-out the Heat pulled within a point, down 16-15. UBCO then took their first lead, going ahead 21-19 after a five-point run. From then on they couldn’t tally back-to-back points, and the Dinos were able to storm back with back-to-back points three times, including a pair of Heat errors that allowed Calgary to take the play and and the set, 27-25.
