The Swift Current Broncos kick started a three-in-three set on Friday night against the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and it was definitely one that will be swept under the rug.

Hitmen forward Mark Kastelic opened the scoring for Calgary halfway through the first period as the Broncos were fortunate to only be down 1-0 in a period that saw Swift Current outshot 14-4 in the frame.

Former Broncos forward Conner Chaulk slid in his second goal since joining Calgary on a second period power play to put Swift Current in a 2-0 hole.

Despite being outshot 27-13 after 40 minutes of play, Swift Current got some spark from team captain Glenn Gawdin as he zoomed down the left wing and zipped one home 25 seconds into the third period to make it a one-goal game.

Unfortunately, this was as close as his club would get back into this game as ex-Broncos continued a nightmare scenario against Swift Current.

Chaulk tipped in his second goal of the game on a Hitmen power play and that was followed with another goal from ex-Broncos forward  Riley Stotts. The goals arrived just 1:23 apart with Stotts goal being a perfectly placed shot from a sharp angle.

Tempers flared as several Broncos and Hitmen players dropped the gloves in what was mayhem at the Saddledome, resulting in an abundance of fighting majors, game misconducts and other penalties on both teams. Former teammates got emotional as Sahvan Khaira and the Hitmen’s Chaulk drew roughing penalites against one another and game misconducts.

Calgary potted two more goals from Jakob Stukel and Orca Wiesblatt to send the Broncos to an eventual 6-1 blowout loss.

Shots on goal were 43-15 in favour of Calgary. The Broncos went 0/3 on the power play while allowing three goals against on eight times being shorthanded. Both clubs finished the night combining for 120 minutes in penalties.

Swift Current needs to put this outing behind them fast as they hit the ice again on Saturday, December 9th, this time against the Red Deer Rebels at the Enmax Centrium. Puck drop is slated for 8:00pm CT.
