Saskatoon Blades forward Braylon Shmyr has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending December 31, 2017.
Shmyr recorded 10 points (3G-7A) in three games in the return from holiday action, helping the Blades climb into a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. As winners of five straight, the Blades sit just 10 points behind the Brandon Wheat Kings for third place in the tight East Division.
In a 4-2 win against the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday, Shmyr picked up three assists, including a helper on the game-winning goal, earning second star of the game honours.
A day later in the second half of the home-and-home set, Shmyr had a five-point night, featuring a pair of goals and three assists. With the Blades battling to maintain a 4-3 lead late in the game, Shmyr scored twice to give the visiting side the cushion they needed to secure the victory, earning third star of the game honours. He also earned second star of the night honours across the entire WHL.
The 5-foot-10, 167-pound product of Calgary, Alta. capped off his week with a goal and an assist against the Swift Current Broncos in a 4-3 road victory for the Blades. Shmyr delivered some late-game heroics again Saturday, assisting on the game-tying goal early in the third to spark the Blades and then scoring the game-winner with 4:35 to go in the final period. His efforts Saturday earned him third star of the game honours in Swift Current.
Overall, eight of Shmyr’s 10 points this week came at even strength while he also picked up a pair of assists on the power play. Through 39 games with the Blades this season, Shmyr has been an offensive force, tallying 53 points (19G-34A). He sits second on the Blades in scoring and 13th in the league scoring race.
Originally selected Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, Shmyr has played in 267 career WHL games, recording 205 points (93G-112A). He also has 24 power play goals and 12 game-winners.
The Blades are back in action Friday, January 5 (7:05 p.m. CST) when they play host to the Red Deer Rebels.
