Tristan Walker and Justin Snith Slide to Fifth at Luge World Cup in Germany

Canada’s doubles luge team slid short of the podium in fifth place, while Alex Gough slid to sixth spot as the World Cup resumed in Konigssee, Germany on Saturday.

Tristan Walker (Cochrance, Alta.) and Calgary’s Justin Snith slid to fifth place for the second-straight year in Bavaria.

Feeding off a bronze-medal finish in the last race before the holiday break, the Canadian sled clocked a two-run time of 1:41.125 down the 11-corner track.

“We are really happy with this result because we had two solid runs and we are continuing with the positive consistency trend that we have built over the last couple of races,” said Walker.

Building on the confidence gained following a reset while racing at home Calgary in an effort to turn around a tough start to the season, the 26-year-old Canucks have been consistent down the track in the last three races. They clocked the fifth fastest time in both heats again on Saturday.

The Germans swept the doubles podium. Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt set the time to beat at 1:39.961. Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken were second at 1:40.095. Robin Geueke and David Gamm slid to the final step on the podium with a time of 1:40.431.

Meanwhile, Alex Gough was the lone Canadian in the women’s race where she slid to sixth spot.

The leader of the Canadian squad matched her result in Konigssee from last year after posting the sixth best time in each heat Gough finished with a time of 1:42.229.

The Germans swept the women’s race as well. Natalie Geisenberger was first at 1:41.397. Dajana Eitberger slid to the silver medal at 1:41.500, while Jessica Tiebel claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1:41.707.

The World Cup continues on Sunday in Konigssee with the men’s singles races followed by the team relay.
