MILLS SHUTS OUT EASTERN WASHINGTON FOR TWU’S SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN

Trinity Western’s Lucas Mills (Burnaby, B.C.) made 35 saves for his second shutout of the season, leading the Spartans to a 3-0 win over Eastern Washington Saturday at the EWU Recreation Centre.

The win completes a weekend series sweep of the Eagles and improves the Spartans winning streak to seven games and their record to 12-3-0-0. The victory also sees TWU pass idle Selkirk for top spot in the BCIHL.

Kade Vilio (Aldergrove, B.C.) led the Spartans offensively with a goal and an assist, while Brandon Potomak and Tyler McMinn also scored for TWU, who fired 61 shots on net.

Vilio opened the scoring at 12:04 of the second period, with Karsten Seidel (Delta, B.C.) and Mackenzie Wiens (Winnipeg) picking up assists. The Spartan forward tallied his ninth goal of the season, taking a pass from Seidel on a two-on-one and slipping it past EWU goalie Tanner Loucks.

The Spartans doubled their lead 25 seconds into the third period when Potomak took the puck off a won faceoff and whipped a shot past Loucks from the top of the left circle.

McMinn, who scored his first goal as a Spartan Friday, rounded out the scoring with 7:30 left in the game, jumping on his own rebound off the rush and burying a shorthanded marker.

TWU beat the Eagles 5-2 on Friday.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Barrett Kropf

I thought our guys played a full 60 minutes tonight. Eastern was full marks for their effort tonight. They did a good job of collapsing in their defensive zone and taking away shooting lanes and their effort, as is always the case, was there. They pushed us to the limit tonight.

“I thought our defensive core really held us in tonight. They let Junior see all the shots he needed to see and he made the saves he needed to make. Our guys are really buying in on the defensive end and that obviously also helps create offence. I thought specifically, Karsten and Mack Wiens had their best game of the year tonight.”
