Mogul athletes were back in action tonight in Deer Valley for the second round of a double program on the legendary Champion Run. Once again, Mikaël Kingsbury dominated from start to finish on the men’s side, with a score of 88.80 in super final that earned him a sixth win in as many starts this season, thus increasing his winning streak to 13 since the Calgary World Cup in 2017. The Quebec skier now has a record 48 World Cup wins.
“The guys were skiing really fast in super final. Standing at the top of the course and hearing the scores, in the 24-second range, was very impressive since the course is really long. Skiing under the 26-second mark on this course is an exploit in itself,” explained Kingsbury. “I did one of my best-ever double full and a very good 1080 in super final. I managed to pull together all the elements along with being very fast.”
This isn’t the first double victory for Kingsbury in Deer Valley, a course that he especially enjoys for the challenges it offers skiers. He had managed that feat in 2015 and in 2017 in single and dual moguls. With today’s wins, he’s got a hat trick! “It’s always great to earn back-to-back wins in Deer Valley, one of the most challenging courses on the circuit, and, in my opinion, the nicest,” admits Kingsbury, who now has 600 points in this season’s FIS standings.
On the ladies’ side, Andi Naude’s performance was as solid as yesterday’s, putting her into the super final for the second time in as many days. Naude finished fifth today.
The national team athletes are now going home for a few days before heading to Tremblant for the ultimate FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup before their pre-Olympic training camp in Apex, BC.
