Whitecaps FC select defenders Justin Fiddes and Lucas Stauffer at 2018 MLS SuperDraft

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Vancouver Whitecaps FC selected defenders Justin Fiddes in the first round (17th overall) and Lucas Stauffer in the second round (26th overall) of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft on Friday. Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft will take place via conference call on Sunday, January 21 at 11 a.m. PT.

Fiddes, 22, started 62 of his 70 appearances in his four years with the University of Washington Huskies, tallying 10 assists and adding one goal.

The 5-foot-11 fullback received United Soccer Coaches (USC) Second Team All Far-West Region, and Honorable Mention All-Pacific 12 Conference honours after his senior season, when he was one of only two players to start all 20 of the Huskies’ matches, and was second on the team in minutes played.

Hailing from San Diego, California, Fiddes starred at Cathedral Catholic High School and represented the San Diego Surf Soccer Club at the US Soccer Development Academy. Fiddes also spent time with the US Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida in 2011.

Fiddes finished first in the speed test by running the 30-meter dash in 3.84 seconds at the recent 2018 adidas MLS Player Combine.

  • Two-time All-Big East Conference First Team honours
  • Youngest player to represent US men’s national futsal team

Stauffer, 22, made 86 appearances for the Creighton University Bluejays over the last four years, recording nine goals and 12 assists.

This past season, Stauffer was named to All-Big East Conference First Team for the second straight year, as well as the USC All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. The 5-foot-6 fullback, who has also played in midfield, was also named to the Big East Conference All-Rookie Team in 2014.

Stauffer also competed in the USL Premier Development League with Portland Timbers U-23 in 2014, Ocala Stampede in 2015, and with Des Moines Menace the past two seasons, making 26 combined appearances and tallying two assists.

Prior to his collegiate career, Stauffer played for Shattuck-St. Mary’s Academy, internationally in Denmark for Club Vejle Boldklub and for Dutch clubs Vitesse and FC Twente, and was a member of the US men’s national futsal team – the youngest player in the program’s history when he joined the roster at age 16.
