BC Lions land free agent receiver Cory Watson

The BC Lions Football Club today announced that national free agent receiver Cory Watson has signed a 2018 contract with the team.

Watson (6’3”, 211) enters his ninth CFL season having spent the past three years in Edmonton preceded by six productive seasons in Winnipeg. Seeing action in 115 regular season games, he’s tallied 290 career receptions for 3,331 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In addition to adding a lot of experience to the offence, Corys leadership and physical style of play is something were going to benefit from this season,” said GM Ed Hervey. “Hes a versatile and consistent receiver who comes to work every day and can fill a number of roles offensively and on special teams.”

The Quebec native attended Concordia University and was Winnipeg’s second-round selection (ninth overall) in the 2010 CFL Draft. He was the ‘Bombers nominee as Most Outstanding Canadian in 2011, recording a team-high 69 catches for 793 yards. Among his accomplishments is two appearances in the Grey Cup, winning a ring in 2015 with Edmonton.

International free agent defensive back Otha Foster has signed a 2018 contract with the team.

Foster (6’0”, 205) enters his fifth CFL season in 2018 having spent parts of the past two years in Saskatchewan preceded by a pair of seasons in Edmonton. Seeing action in 54 regular season games, he’s recorded 184 defensive tackles, six sacks and three interceptions.

Otha is a talented and hardhitting defensive back who can play both secondary spots as well as the nickel position,” said GM Ed Hervey. “He brings us significant gameready experience and is a definite upgrade for our defence.”

The Louisiana native and West Alabama grad was an undrafted free agent signing of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013 before signing with the Toronto Argonauts in early 2014. Traded to the Green and Gold in May that year, his two years in Edmonton included a Grey Cup victory in 2015. After a productive year with the ‘Riders in 2016, Foster signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017 and attended training camp with the club. He returned to Saskatchewan midway through last season and appeared in three regular season games.

Solomon Elimimian has signed a contract with the team through the 2019 season.

One of the greatest linebackers to pull on the orange and black, Elimimian enters his ninth season in with the Lions in 2018 and comes off another historic campaign in 2017 setting a CFL record with 144 defensive stops through 18 regular season games.

Solomon has been the centerpiece of our defence for a number of years and this is great news for the club and our fans,” said head coach Wally Buono. “He continues to play at a very high level and I know how deeply he cares for this team and being part of our community.”

The CFL’s Most Outstanding player in 2014 and a two-time Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2014 and 2016, Elimimian is the Lions’ all-time leader in defensive tackles with 719 and 755 combined tackles overall. A four-time CFL All-Star, the future Hall of Fame candidate has appeared in 114 regular season games and hit double-digits in tackles six times last season.
