Tyler Steenbergen

Swift Current, SK: The Swift Current Broncos enjoyed a night full of milestones as they cruised to a convincing 6-2 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night.

Arizona Coyotes prospect Tyler Steenbergen scored his second goal in two games to open the scoring exactly halfway through the first period. Giorgio Estephan batted down the puck on the blue line and Aleksi Heponiemi completed a little one touch pass to Steenbergen in setting up the goal.

Estephan than blasted in Swift Current’s second goal via one-timer as Heponiemi again registered the primary assist and it was 2-0 Broncos.

The Broncos were not finished in that opening frame as the onslaught resumed shortly after. Estephan notched his third point of the period on a Broncos power play when his shot on net was deflected into the Tigers cage by forward Beck Malenstyn.

On yet another Swift Current man advantage, a pair of Broncos each accomplished significant milestones. Team captain Glenn Gawdin one-timed his 50th goal of the season by Tigers goaltender Michael Bullion at the 17:19 mark. Colby Sissons tallied a helper while Heponiemi earned another assist for his 100th point of the year.

In the second period, 20-year-old forward Matteo Gennaro did a nice little forehand backhand move while parked in front of the Medicine Hat goal to bury his 36th of the season and increasing the Broncos lead to 5-0.

Then just 36 seconds later, Malenstyn put the Broncos up a touchdown by tipping in his second of the night off an initial slap shot from Artyom Minulin.

Shots on goal were 21-19 for Medicine Hat after 40 minutes but Swift Current produced quality scoring chances in an impressive outing.

Medicine Hat forwards Ryan Jevne and Henry Rybinski each netted a marker in the third period but nonetheless, the Broncos put the game out of reach and delivered a 6-2 win in front of a sold out crowd at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex.

Broncos netminder Stuart Skinner compiled 37 saves to earn his 99th career WHL victory.

Shots on goal were 39-34 in favour of Medicine Hat. The Broncos top ranked power play unit went 2/2 on the night while the Tigers finished 0/3.

Swift Current improves its record to a productive 42-13-3-1 mark and only trail the Moose Jaw Warriors by one point for first place in the WHL’s East Division standings.
