KAMLOOPS, BC—The Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack women’s rugby sevens will play their final tournament of their season this weekend.
The WolfPack will be one of seven teams at the University of Victoria to play in a two day event which begins Saturday (Feb 24-25).
Head coach Derek Pue says his team got a lot of valuable experience in their first ever Canada West tournament earlier this month. “The girls showed great resilience through a very hard weekend (going 0-6),” he says. “The majority of our girls have never experienced a two day rugby tournament at this level before. The team showed exactly the character and attitude we are pushing for with this program.”
The WolfPack have been back inside training three times a week in preparation for the Victoria event. “We have been working on tempo and decision making. The speed that these top teams operate at require our girls to communicate and make decisions at a much quicker rate. If we can improve that tempo and push our work rate higher, our results will improve.”
As he looks ahead to the weekend, Pue states, “The whole group is excited. We are pushing ourselves to improve our UFV results. We know where we stand against these teams and now the goal is to move forward every game and make improvements.”
Thompson Rivers will play Fraser Valley (930 am), UVIC (12:20 pm), Alberta (130 pm) and Calgary (330 pm) on Saturday. They will finish up against UBC (10 am) and Lethbridge (2 pm) on Sunday.
Following the tournament, Thompson Rivers University and administration will review the future of the schools involvement in women’s rugby sevens.
