February 11th marked the day the Brooks High School Gymnastics team and the Powell River Christian School Gymnastics team went to battle with 21 other High Schools in the Vancouver Island Zone. Every team athlete was competing to earn a berth to attend the BC High School Gymnastics Championships in Burnaby this March.
Representing Powell River Christian School was Hillary Brooks, a Level 4 High School gymnast. Hillary earned the Gold All Around placement for this competition as well as earning gold on beam, silver on bars and a bronze on vault.
The Brooks Secondary School team sent a contingent of 12 athletes to the trials: Alessa Plisson (Level 1 Junior), Jessi Burge (Level 1 Senior), Jordyn MacKenzie (Level 2), Kaitlyn McKay (Level 2), Kate Forbes (Level 2), Naraa Little (Level 3), Rebeca Bailey (Level 3), Trystinna Bailey (Level 4), Rachel Peckford (Level 4), Ekaterina Senilova (Level 5), Katie Dohm (Level 5) and Dylan Werner (Men’s Level 4).
The team reaped fabulous results with 7 of the 12 teammates earning a spot to attend the Championships. Unfortunately, prior commitments will prevent Dohm and Little from attending the Championships, so they were able to release their spots for other deserving athletes.
Earning podium spots during the trials were Burge who came home with Silver All Around, gold for vault and silvers for the bars, beam and floor. MacKenzie brought home a bronze for bars. Little brought home a gold for beam and a silver for vault. Bailey received a Silver All Around, gold for floor, silver for vault and bronze for bars. Peckford earned a gold for beam. Senilova earned Gold All Around, gold for vault and beam, silver for bars and bronze for floor. Dohm brought home Silver All Around, gold for bars and silver for the vault, beam and floor. Werner aced his category bringing home Gold All Around and gold on every individual event.
The athletes are now gearing up for the Championships which will be held March 8-10th at Moscrop Secondary School in Burnaby, BC. They are training hard with plans to bring medals home to the Powell River District once again.
