Canada Men Seven’s Find Their Pace With Narrow Win Over Wales

March 3rd, 2018 Las Vegas, NV ( ISN ) – The Canada Seven’s Men’s team finally found their winning mark with a 21-19 victory over Wales in their final game of pool play Saturday afternoon at the Las Vegas Sevens held at UNLV’s Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canada entered the game against Wales with a 17-30-1 record. Canada’s last win over Wales was in February during the Hamilton Sevens Tournament, where Canada snatched another narrow 19-14 win from the Welsh team.

After losses to England and South Africa in opening day action Friday, Canada will now advance to the Trophy quarterfinals to be played Saturday evening.

In Game play, Canada would catch Wales knapping ay the opening kick of as Connor Braid would record Canada’s first try of the game at the 28 second mark. Without a Wales reply, Nathan Hirayama would put Canada’s second try to the board only two minutes later, taking a Harry Jones pass and running the wing from inside Wales side of centre field for a 14-0 lead.

Wales, not to be denied making a game of it, would reply with two trys of their own before time would expire in the first half.

Wales would continue their pressure on the ball to open the second half, finding the try line for their third consecutive try of the game 36 seconds into the 2nd frame to take a brief 19-14 lead. A missed conversion would later come back to haunt the Welsh side.

Justin Douglas would break loose from deep in his own end after being a recipient of a Pat Kay toss to run away from the Wales defense, sprinting down the wing to regain the lead 21-19 four minutes remaining in the match.

Canada would hold the ball defensively in Wale’s own end for the last two minutes, forcing a turnover that allowed Canada to threaten a score and run the clock out to take the 21-19 win.

Nathan Hirayama, third in the 2018 HSBC Sevens Series point board scoring race, added to his total scoring eleven points in the match. Connor Braid and Justin Douglas would each score five points.

Canada will now play Spain, the fourth place “C” pool finisher. That game will take place at 4:54pm today.
