Tom Huisman has been appointed as UBC Okanagan’s new Director, Athletics and Recreation. He joins UBC Okanagan with more than 25 years of senior sport and university leadership experience that followed his own athletic career as a provincial soccer player and varsity distance and cross-country runner.

Originally from Winnipeg and an MBA graduate of the University of Manitoba, Tom held the positions of Executive Director of the Coaches Association and Provincial Coaching Coordinator for Sport Manitoba before moving to the Ottawa region as the Director of Operations for Canadian Interuniversity Sport (now U Sports) for more than 15 years. Most recently, Tom was the Manager of Interuniversity Sport Programs at Carleton University, helping guide Carleton sport teams to multiple National and Provincial Championships.

As a community engaged leader, Tom is a former Staff Coach with both the Manitoba and Ontario Soccer Associations, and a current Canadian Sports for Life Ambassador. Tom has also served as President of the Sport Medicine Council of Manitoba, President of the Russell Community Sport Club, Club Head Coach of the Russell Soccer Club, and founder and Head Coach of the Russell Run Club.

Tom is looking forward to the opportunity to lead and build upon the solid foundation of athletic and recreation programs at UBC Okanagan, and to contribute to the sport and recreation landscape of Kelowna and surrounding region.

Tom Huisman, whose appointment becomes effective May 1st, will attend this Friday’s Scholarship Breakfast as an informal introduction to the Okanagan athletics community and utilize the event as a first chance to meet the over 300 supporters in attendance at the 13th annual event.
