Island Football League Kicks Off Season With Jamboree Showcase

Saturday April 7, 2018   Langford, BC (ISN) – The Island Football League kicked off its 2018 spring season Saturday with a Vancouver Island showcase jamboree of minor community football talent at Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC.

The day-long “ice breaker” friendly put Atom, PeeWee, and Junior Bantam teams from Greater Victoria, Duncan, and Naniamo together in head to head action against each other from their respective divisions to shake off the dust and work out the bugs in their play books before the regular season starts in earnest.

The Island Football League, in it’s inaugural season, is a comprised this year of three community minor football associations, Greater Victoria Minor Football Association, Cowichan Valley Football Association, and the South Side Minor Football Association (Nanaimo).

The day would begin with a brunch-time match up between division rival Westshore Warriors and the Saanich Raiders in the sole atom division contest of the jamboree. The Warriors would prevail 24-12.

In the PeeWee division a total of three games would pit Saanich Wolverines, Westshore Warriors and the Cowichan Bulldogs against each other. The Wolverines would fall to Westshore 18-6, but recover with a narrow 6-0 win against the Cowichan Bulldogs despite playing 2 consecutive games back to back.

The Cowichan Bulldogs would dominate the Junior Bantam division, running the table to go 3-0 on the afternoon, defeating the Warriors and Wolverines by scores of 32-0 and 12-6, and defeating the South Side Dawgs of Nanaimo 18-6. The Warriors would finish the afternoon 1-2, while the Dawgs would post a 2-1 record. Last year’s VICFA and Zone Bowl Champion Saanich Wolverines would struggle in the win column with a 0-3 finish, narrowly defeated by six points in all three contests despite strong play on both sides of the ball.

If the talent demonstrated on the field Saturday is any indication of the play to come this spring, it is sure to be an entertaining season of minor league football on Vancouver Island.

If two words came to mind to describe the anticipated level of play this season it would be “Entertaining” and “Parity”.
