The Commonwealth Games inaugural beach volleyball tournament preliminary round is over, and the competition will heat up on Tuesday with the beginning of the knockout stage at Coolangatta Beach in Australia’s Gold Coast, Queensland.

Pool play wrapped up on Monday, with both of Canada’s teams going undefeated so far to win their pools.  On Monday, Sam Pedlow and Sam Schachter defeated Scotland 2-0, and women’s team of Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan beat England 2-0.

Each of the men’s and women’s events included 12 teams in three pools of four for the first phase. The top two of each pool and the best two of the third-ranked teams advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

Tuesday’s Commonwealth Games quarterfinals are complete at Coolangatta Beach in Australia’s Gold Coast.  Both Canadian beach volleyball teams advance to the semifinals.

In the women’s competition, FIVB World Ranking leaders Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan moved a step closer to the women’s gold medal match by advancing to the last four.

The Canadians beat Scotland’s Lynne Beattie and Melissa Coutts 2-0 (21-9, 21-9), and they will next take on Mariota Angelopoulou and Manolina Konstantinou after the Cypriot duo beat New Zealand’s Shaunna Polley and Kelsie Wills 2-0 (21-10, 21-17).

“Being ranked number one in the world puts a target on our backs, and we want to play our best every single game,” said Pavan. “That approach doesn’t change no matter who we play.”

Sam Schachter and Sam Pedlow defeated Cyprus team Dimitris Apostolou and Georgios Chrysostomou 2-0 (21-17, 21-15), while the O’Dea brothers beat Trinidad and Tobago’s Daneil Williams and Daynte Stewart 2-0 (21-15, 21-14).

“We’ve been slowly adding to our game and it’s been great to see the teams pushing us,” said Pedlow.  “You have to hand it to Cyprus today; those guys didn’t give up on anything.”

The semifinal on April 11 will see Canada against New Zealand brothers Sam and Ben O’Deo, who defeated Trinidad and Tobago today.
