The Eves of Destruction gave the island derby community a taste of the level of talent being fostered in their league with wins recorded by both their junior team, The Rotten Apples, and their adult developmental team, The Hard Cores, Saturday night (April 28) in Chemainus. The Apples started the night off strong with a 204-149 win over Saltspring Island’s The Tempest. The Hard Cores continued that winning streak in their match against Cowichan Valley’s Brass Knuckle Derby Dames, with a final score of 224-99.

Rotten Apples Coach reGretel says she was very impressed by the level of play her team displayed considering the number of rookies on the team:

“This was the first game for Corasaurus Rex and Snap Dragon, who both proved to be strong blockers, as well as Scream Soda who jammed four times during the game and claimed 18 of the Apples’ points.”

The Apples’ MVP honours were given to Slaya Fay for jamming and Slam Duncan for blocking.

The Hard Cores game also featured two individuals playing in their first derby games: Amelia Pound and Cindy Chop’er, who both played a significant role as blockers in the team’s defensive plays. These two joined the team after a period of reffing, and are successfully taking their eagle eyes to the track as players.

This exciting bout was unfortunately marred by injury suffered on both sides, with the game ultimately being called off several minutes early in consideration of the second serious injury.

As Hard Cores Captain Violet Criminal explains, “It is sad to see two skaters down after a great game like that — but we know both teams will rally around their players to support their recoveries and returns to derby.” On a more positive note for the Hard Cores’ first game of the season, she added, “We were so proud of how this new team played together last night. We came together with hard hitting jammers and solid defensive walls.”

Hard Cores MVP nods were given to Daddy Stronglegs for jamming and reGretel for blocking.

“That was an outstanding first game,” said Amelia Pound. “BKDD were hard and fun opponents, and it was a privilege to share the track with them!”
