UVic Vikes golf at Canadian University Championship

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s golf teams both began their quest for the title of the best team in the nation at the Canadian University Golf Championships on May 29 in Chilliwack, B.C.

After the first day of the four-round tournament taking place at the Chilliwack Golf Club, both of the Vikes teams find themselves well within striking distance of the tournament leaders, with the women surging to third-place and the men in sixth.

On the women’s side, the Vikes strong start to the day puts them in a three-team group that tops the leaderboard. Their score of 226, is behind only the UBC Thunderbirds (221), and the Montréal Carabins (223).

All four members of the Vikes sit comfortably in the top-15, led by third-year Quinn Fitzgerald in fifth. Fitzgerald birdied two of the final three holes in her round to card a score of two-over-par 74 and sits just two strokes back of the individual lead.

Hot on the heels of Fitzgerald is Nicole Gargarella. A second-year Vike, Gargarella sits in a tie for seventh-place after hitting two birdies in her round.

Rhiannon Jones and Cadence Hellmann round on the Vikes effort on the women’s side after they carded identical scores of 77 to tie for 13th.

The Vikes men meanwhile, are right on the cusp of a spot in the top-3, with their opening-round score of 295 putting them in sixth-place. The Vikes are behind UBC and Montréal who are tied for fourth on 293, but the story of the day was the host team from the University of Fraser Valley Cascades who shot an incredible score of ten-under-par 278.

Jacob Hayes led the way for the team by firing in four birdies for an even-par score of 72. Fourth-year Vike Mike Griffin is just one shot back of Hayes in a tie for 21st. Bruce Tomie and Lawren Rowe shot rounds of three-over-par 75 and Josh Miller’s score of 77 sees him sit in a tie for 58th-place after the first day of competition.

The second round of action will begin at 7:30 a.m., with Tomie being the first Vike to hit the links at 8:20 a.m. Live-scoring of that second round can be found here.
