The BCSSRU Boys High School Rugby Provincial Championship tournament kicks off this Wednesday, May 30th, running until Saturday, June 2nd at Rotary Stadium and the adjacent fields at Exhibition Park in Abbotsford. The tournament will feature 32 teams from the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland. In what will surely be an exciting finish to an eventful season of rugby, six division finals will be contested between Junior Level, AA Tier 1 & 2, AAA Tier 1 & 2 and the AAAA Division. Kickoff time for the first game of the tournament is 9am, Wednesday, May 30th.
The AAAA final, regularly one to watch, is of particular interest this year. Shawnigan Lake, clear favourites from the Premier League play throughout the season, lost to Oak Bay Secondary on Wednesday, May 23, by a score of 20-15 in the AAAA Vancouver Island final in Victoria. These two teams may meet again in the final of the AAAA bracket, which includes other BC rugby powerhouses, St. George’s and Carson Graham Secondary.
Surrey’s Earl Marriott Secondary was part of Premier League play but endured a tough season and finished fifth in the standings, meaning they will compete in the AAA Tier 1 this week. The Marriott Mariners are coming off a thrilling win over South Delta’s Sun Devils in the AAA Tier 1 Fraser Valley final. In what was described as an “instant classic” by the Varsity Letters’ Howard Tsumura, the Fraser Valley final saw six lead changes in 80 minutes with the go-ahead try being scored with less than two minutes left on the clock. The Sun Devils were regarded lightly going into last year’s provincials but shocked the number two ranked Yale in a tight loss, since then they have been on everybody’s radar. This year, they’re the number two ranked team and Yale is number three. They look to face Marriott again in the coming days.
In AA Tier 1, the North Shore stalwart, Collingwood, looks to make a push for a provincial win after their third straight Lower Mainland title was achieved earlier this month. Brentwood, St. Michael’s, G.W Graham, and more, will try to stop them.
If you are interested in watching the tournament, but can’t travel to Abbotsford, all matches played in the Rotary stadium will be live streamed via SportsCanada.
