VICTORIA – A pair of provincial rivalries open the 2018 Canada West rugby season Sunday, Sept. 9, as the Alberta Pandas host the Lethbridge Pronghorns, while the UBC Thunderbirds welcome the Victoria Vikes.
That trip to Vancouver will be the lone away game for a Vikes team that will host the Pronghorns on Sept. 16, the Calgary Dinos on Sept. 21 and UBC on Sept. 30, before wrapping up the season on Wallace Field against the Alberta Pandas on Oct. 14.
The Vikes have made it to the past three Canada West Championship games in a row and will be trying to capture the second conference title in program history when the Pandas host the conference championship tournament in Edmonton, Alta. on Oct. 19-21.
A successful Canada West campaign could send the Vikes across the country to compete at the U SPORTS National Championship, being held Nov. 1-4 at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS.
A game to circle for Vikes fans will be the Sept. 21 clash against Calgary. The Vikes and Dinos have dominated Canada West rugby as of late and have met in the past two Conference Championship games, with the Dinos coming out on top on both occasions.
The Vikes will have recent history on their side however, as their perfect 18-0 run in the Canada West Rugby 7s Series this past spring included three victories over the Dinos. The game also serves as the annual Jenny Vincent Memorial Game and is played in honour of the late Jenny Vincent, who was an integral part in building both the Vikes and Dinos programs.
In total, one away game and four games at home is the task that lays ahead for a Vikes team that continues to build itself into one of the top programs in the nation.
