Eves’ home teams both record three wins at Summer Slam Tournament

The Eves’ home teams Margarita Villains and Belles of the Brawl both won three bouts at the two-day event in New Westminster, BC. Hosted by Vancouver’s Terminal City Rollergirls, the annual Summer Slam tournament draws teams from all over the province.

Thanks to strong defensive focus from blocking lines, and agile jammers who were light on penalties, the Brawlers bested Nanaimo’s Harbour City Hydras 257-103, tournament hosts, Team Terminal, 308 – 97 and Cloverdale’s Smokin’ Laces 308 – 83.

The Villains, meanwhile, featuring several rookie skaters, beat Team Terminal 265 – 195, the Smokin’ Laces 246 – 126 and the Hydras in a nail biting final game 129 – 114.

Villains Co-Captain, C-3Ph0, says the team went into the weekend with a focus on team cohesiveness, on and off the track:

“Our game play focused on defense and controlling the game. We had a number of skaters in their first ever tournament and our more tenured skaters provided invaluable feedback and support throughout the weekend.”

The Eves of Destruction were also represented by a large contingent of officials, both on and off the skates, at the tournament. The referee roster included Bobby Flayer, Velvita Slicer, Karma, and InterVeener, while the non-skating officials included Hexadeci-Mal, Tidal Wade, Just Dana, and Kathy. Eves head ref TKO pulled double duty and reffed 6 games and NSO’d 3. The weekend was a great reminder that it takes more than skaters to make this sport a success and we are so proud of our talented officials.

Roller derby returns to Greater Victoria with two bouts on July 7th. The annual Pride game features Eves vs Eves in a fun colourful match. The headlining regulation bout will follow and features the A-Team versus the Anarchy Angels. The teams were only separated by 11 points when they last met in April.

All the action takes place at Esquimalt’s Archie Browning Arena. The event is family friendly (kids under 10 are free!), and includes a beer garden, half-time contest, 50-50 draw, and a vendor village. Doors open at 5, first whistle is at 5:30.

Advance tickets for the July 7 double-header are $10 and are available online at ticketrocket.co, and in person at Hive Hair, Esquimalt Rec Centre, Studio 4, Logan’s Pub. Tickets are also available at the door on game day for $15.
