Dalhousie University men’s basketball coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the addition of Mike Shoveller to the 2018-19 lineup.

Shoveller comes to the Tigers after four seasons with Queen’s Gaels.

A 6’11 centre, Shoveller played four seasons with the Queen’s Gaels of the Ontario University Athletics conference (OUA). He averaged 11.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last season after taking the 2016-17 season off to recuperate from a torn ACL.

He joined team Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games this past April, helping lead them to a silver medal finish in Australia’s Gold Coast.

Shoveller is a familiar name at Dalhousie. The annual Rod & Joan Shoveller Memorial Men’s Basketball Tournament is named in honour of his grandparents.

“I am extremely excited to be furthering my education at Dalhousie while playing for the Tigers this upcoming season,” says Shoveller. “Dal has always held a special place in my heart with the annual holiday tournament named in my grandparents’ honour.”

A native of Arnprior, O.N., Shoveller was the recipient of the Marc Alessio Memorial Scholarship last year and recently graduated with a degree in political science from Queen’s. He will begin the Master of Public Administration program at Dalhousie this fall.

“Mike is a great offensive threat who brings a wealth of maturity and experience to our program,” says Plato. “At 6’11, his interior defensive and rebounding ability will strengthen our line up at both ends of the court. We’re very pleased he will be able to play in the tournament named in honour of his family.”

The 2018-19 U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship hosts tip-off the regular season Saturday, November 28 playing when the Cape Breton Capers come to town.
