VICTORIA – One final name has been added to the list of incoming men’s soccer recruits for the 2018-19 season and head coach Bruce Wilson along with the University of Victoria Vikes are pleased to announce that name with the commitment of 17 year-old Matt Hobson of Surrey, B.C.

Hobson brings with him many outstanding attributes to the program, chief among them are his leadership and versatility. A captain of his Fleetwood Park Secondary school team, Hobson has the ability to line up just about anywhere on the soccer pitch.

“Matt is a very solid player, who has proven over the last two years his ability,” said Wilson. “He is a very versatile player, having the ability to play anywhere in the backline or midfield.”

A willingness to contribute wherever and whenever is something that both Wilson and Hobson agree upon.

“With my club team I start on the right wing and with my school team I start in the centre midfield, but I am also very experienced at fullback and have played a lot of centre back,” said Hobson. “My fitness, intelligence, and work ethic allow me to be very versatile, and I’m excited to see where Bruce and the coaching staff see me contributing best in the coming years.”

The recipient of the Fleetword Park Secondary Dragonheart Award and Scholarship – awarded annually to a graduating student that displays extraordinary athletic excellence, leadership and sportsmanship – Hobson was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class.

“More than anything else he is a leader, and we are extremely happy that he has committed to our program,” said Wilson.

A multi-sport athlete throughout his time in high school, the 5’11 Hobson can list Fleetwood Park soccer, track and cross country MVP awards among his many accomplishments.

“I was drawn to UVic because of the beautiful campus as well as its reputation as one of the top schools in Western Canada,” said Hobson. “Of course, the soccer and athletics program in general is very appealing.”

A Provincial Premier Cup finalist with Surrey United of the B.C. Soccer Premier League in 2017, Hobson also led his high school team to a fifth-place finish at the AAA Provincials last season.

“I’m very excited to come to UVic next year, and even more excited to be joining the men’s soccer team,” said Hobson. “It’s a huge honour to have been recruited to such a fantastic program that has a long history as one of the best in Canada and I can’t wait for the season to start.”
