SPARTANS BEGIN CALIFORNIA TOUR WITH SHUTOUT WIN

31

Trinity Western fifth year keeper Rachel Sydor (Tsawwassen, B.C.) earned her fourth blank sheet of the 2018 preseason as she backstopped the Spartans to a 2-0 victory over the Azusa Pacific University Cougars Thursday afternoon in Azusa, California.

On the offensive side of the park TWU got goals from fourth year forward Rachel Hutchinson (Cloverdale, B.C.), who scored in the eighth minute, and third year midfielder Gabi Short (Calgary), who scored in the 45th minute, to give the Spartans the opening win of their three match preseason tour of California.

Sydor made three saves to earn her fourth straight shutout and improve TWU’s preseason record to an unbeaten 5-0-1. The shutout extends Sydor’s goalless streak to 374 minutes.

The Cougars split the goal keeping duties between Jennifer Kovisto, Isabelle Decker, and Tatum French. Kovisto and French each gave up a goal.

Azusa outshot Trinity Western 10-9, while the Spartans had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans will continue their tour tomorrow afternoon when they take on NCAA Div. II Cal State San Marcos. Match time in San Marcos, California is set for 2 p.m. PT.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
On the match

“I was a good opening game, we probably had the better of the chances, but Azusa put up a good fight. This was a good team performance and happy that we were able to get minutes for a lot of players.”

NOTABLE

  • The Spartans shutout streak is now at 464 minutes.
  • Hutchinson’s goal was her third of the year, while Short’s goal was her second of the preseason.
  • Azusa is ranked 2nd in the NCAA Div. II PacWest conference.

Trinity Western’s women’s soccer team will open its Canada West championship defence with a rematch of last year’s gold medal game against Victoria Sept. 7 at the Spartans Chase Office Field.

The Spartans season-opening contest is part of a key home weekend in which the Spartans will also host UBC Sept. 8. TWU capped last year’s Canada West campaign with a 3-0 semifinal win over the Thunderbirds followed by a 2-1 win over the Vikes in the conference final.

TWU posted a 10-3-1 regular season record last year, which included a 10-match shutout streak. The Spartans went on to win the conference title before earning a bronze medal at the national championship.

The Spartans have played in each of the last seven Canada West championship games, winning four times (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017).
