Fresh off their first-ever national titles last November, the reigning U SPORTS champion Cape Breton Capers (men) and Montreal Carabins (women) are the top-ranked soccer squads in the nation to begin the 2018 campaign.
The Capers captured their elusive first Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy with a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks in Kamloops, B.C. last fall, while the Carabins earned the first Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy in school history with a narrow 1-0 win in Winnipeg. Both games featured the same matchup, with Cape Breton facing Montreal in the men’s and women’s final.
Montreal, who holds the pole position for the first time in nearly four years (Sept.23, 2014) opens the season hosting Laval Wednesday night. Cape Breton kicks off their season on Sept. 8 by welcoming UNB.
New this season, U SPORTS is implementing the ELO Rating System for the calculation of its weekly national rankings. Powered by RankR, ELO’s unique algorithm blends a statistical calculation with customized variables that is adaptable across a range of sports.
