Canada’s senior men’s field lacrosse team, which lost in heartbreaking fashion in the finals of the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in Netanya, Israel, has been named a finalist for the Summer Team of the Year at the 41st Canadian Sport Awards. The winners will be announced at a black-tie awards gala held at the Brookstreet Hotel in Ottawa on Thursday, September 20, 2018.
The Canadian Sport Awards are an iconic awards show first established 45 years ago to showcase excellence in Canadian sport, and have quickly evolved to become the premier event for national sport achievement and leadership recognition. AthletesCAN will breathe new life into this prestigious event, last held in 2012, with the help of industry leading media partner, CBC Sports.
This year’s awards show, which will be held in conjunction with the 26th annual AthletesCAN Forum, will be hosted by Olympians and CBC Broadcasters Perdita Felicien and Alex Despatie. The event will bring together members of the sport, media and corporate communities to honour nominees in a variety of individual, partner, team, corporate and influencer categories.
Canada’s senior men’s field lacrosse team faced challenges on and off the field throughout their world championship journey, culminating with a loss to the United States in the gold medal game of the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship on a controversial last-second goal.
The team is up against three other Canadian national teams for the Summer Team of the Year award.
The other finalists in the category are the senior women’s softball team, which earned its second consecutive bronze medal at the 2018 WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship in Japan; the senior men’s basketball team from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which won Canada’s first ever Commonwealth Games medal in basketball; and the senior women’s basketball team from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which lost in bronze medal game and finished the tournament in fourth place.
