The 2018 55+ BC Games took place last week in Kimberley and Cranbrook. The curling competition had six categories and took place at Cranbrook Curling Club.
The Vancouver Island North team of Richard Tanguay, Blair Cusack, Terry Woloshyn and Rick Thomson won the Men’s 55-64 division. The Women’s 55-64 division was won by Kim Jonsson, Lonnie Schopp, Kelly Bleau and Penny Shantz, who also represented Vancouver Island North.
The Men’s 65+ division was won by the North Central team of Gerry Loreth, Bud Burbee, Jim Burbee and Ron Durocher, while the Women’s 65+ division was won by the South Central team of Patricia Probyn, Eleanor Payment, Lisa Schwartzenhauer and Dorothy Bradford.
In the Mixed categories, the Fraser Valley team of Craig Lepine, Karen Lepine, Susan Beuk and Nico Beuk won the 55-64 gold medal, and the West Kootenay Boundary team of Russ Beauchamp, Marnie Devlin, Rose Beauchamp and Paul Devlin won the 65+ gold medal.
There was also a floor curling competition, which took place at the Kimberley Senior Centre and featured two flights of Mixed 55+ teams. The gold medal winning teams consisted of the West Kootenay team of Linda Wood, Alan Amonson, Malcolm Gregory and Kathy Gregory, and the Vancouver Island North team of Shirley Davis, Bruce McCaig, Joyce McCaig and Wendy Pearce.
The 55+ BC Games is an annual province-wide, multi-sport event governed by the BC Seniors Games Society. The 2018 55+ BC Games featured over 2,500 participants competing in 23 sports and activities. The 2019 55+ BC Games will take place in Kelowna from September 10 to 14.
