The Saanich Braves undefeated season came to end when they lost to the Peninsula Panthers in overtime. The top seeded team in the VIJHL was expected to beat the Panthers but with their sloppy plays and sloppy choices it cost them deeply.
The start of the game was haphazard for Saanich as they were not able to capitalize in the first period. The Panthers came out strong as they were trying to get out of the bottom of the south division standings. The game went scoreless until 17:13 minutes into the second period, Graeme Getty, of the Saanich Braves scored (collecting his 4th goal of the season), it was assisted by Kyle Mace.
It wasn’t long before the Panthers were able to tie the game with 6:32 left in the third period. Carson Cox scoring his first goal for the Panthers putting a blow in to the Braves players. Overtime came around and it wasn’t until the second overtime period that the Panthers scored. Josh Lingard potted his 4th goal that was assisted from Skyler Diamond-Burchuk, which sealed the deal for the Panthers beating the top team in the league.
Although they had several chances of scoring they still were not capable of finding the back of the net. The Braves out shot the Panthers 44 to 38 shots. The Braves also had a 5 on 3 powerplay and were not able to capitalize. The question now remains, what can the Braves do so they don’t allow this sloppy play from happening again?
