Coach John Machuga has been training his squad of runners for the increased challenge of competing in Canada West and U SPORTS, the highest level of interuniversity competition in Canada, since late in the summer. Preparing the team for upcoming season where they will compete against the best runner in Canada.

UBCO has run in the CCAA for the past seven seasons. In that time in the CCAA the teams have won two national championships, one national champion, and four national medals.

Veronika Fagan, was the national individual champion last year and is a part of the women’s squad this year and is ready to make the jump in competition level and was the student speaker at last year’s UBC Scholarship Breakfast.

“The team is motivated and has been training hard,” Machuga states. “They are looking forward to the new challenge of U SPORTS and look forward to testing themselves against a Canada West opponent.”

The meet is scheduled to begin at noon the six kilometre race for the women runners and the eight kilometre men’s race subsequently at 1 p.m. Runners from Thompson Rivers and the Heat cross country teams will duel on the Saturday.

The scoring for the dual meet between the two universities will be a standard format with four racers to score and top-7 as displacers.

The race on Saturday will count towards the Presidents’ Cup Athletics Challenge, even though this is a cross country race and in the past hasn’t counted as a part of the campus challenge between TRU and UBCO.

The Cup started in 1993 between the two BC interior schools, stopped from 2004 2014 and a Cup has been giving out to the top school, in each gender, to the cumulative winner in the sports of basketball, soccer and volleyball, and for a few years golf.

With both teams competing in Canada West and U SPORTS in cross country the points accrued from the races will be added to the Cup.
