BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic – Canada picked up three medals (men’s silver and bronze, women’s silver) from the 2018 NORCECA Beach Volleyball final tournament.
In the men’s final, Mexicans Josué Gaxiola and José Luis Rubio captured the gold in three sets 2-1 (22-20, 17-21, 15-13) over Canadians Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) and Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) on Sunday evening.
Gaxiola and Rubio advanced to the final after a 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) triumph over Americans William Allen and Ryan Doherty in the semis. Pedlow and Schachter beat fellow Canadians Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) and Grant O’Gorman (Toronto) 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) in their semifinal match. Saxton and O’Gorman then earned the bronze medal following a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) win over Allen/Doherty.
The U.S. team of Alix Klineman and April Ross claimed the women’s gold medal at Boca Chica over top-seeded Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) and Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto) of Canada on Sunday after a 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) victory.
The second-seeded Klineman and Ross had beaten fellow Americans Kelley Larsen and Emily Stockman in a three-set semifinal duel that finished 2-1 (21-18, 19-21, 22-20).
Wilkerson and Bansley advanced to the final match after defeating Cubans Arlin Hechavarría and Yanisleidis Sánchez 2-0 (21-14, 21-16).
The women’s bronze medal went to Larsen and Stockman, who defeated Hechavarría/Sánchez 2-0 (21-14, 21-19).
Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes finished in the fifth position after a 2-0 (21-10, 21-11) win over Martha Revuelta and Zaira Orellana of Mexico.
This event granted FIVB points, drawing some of the best teams in region looking to add to their current tallies.
