Kirwan tallies late, leads Huskies to road win

A late-game goal helped lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies past the University of Calgary Dinos 2-1 at Father David Bauer Arena on Friday evening.

Leah Bohlken scored her third goal in the first three games of the season and Kayla Kirwan put home the game-winner late in the third period for the Huskies. Jasey Book made 10 saves to record the win in her first start of the season.

It was all Saskatchewan out of the chute as they registered 15 shots in the opening frame against the four that got through for the Dinos.

Despite chances coming from a Rachel Paul breakaway, and a late scramble on the power play by the Huskies, which saw a highlight reel stop from Calgary goaltender Kelsey Roberts, the game stayed deadlocked at one coming out of the first.

An early penalty in the second period from Delaney Frey gave the Huskies a five-on-three power play to build on the man advantage carrying over from the first frame. It did not take long for the Huskies to strike as their team-leading goal scorer Bohlken buried a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle.

The Dinos responded just two minutes later off a three-on-two rush where Chelsea Court set up rookie Elizabeth Lang for her team-leading third tally of the season.

Roberts continued to face a heavy workload and kept the score even going into the third period.

After a competitive third period, Saskatchewan’s Kayla Kirwan was left out in front of the net alone with under five minutes left where she solved the Dinos’ star goaltender.

After the clinching goal, Roberts headed to the bench for an extra attacker but the Dinos were unable to capitalize.

These two teams will be right back at it tomorrow for the second game of the series. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
