The Victoria Cougars defeated the Saanich Braves 3-1 Friday night. The Braves were holding their annual “Pink in the Rink” event and they had a lot to prove. The Cougars had a couple of members suspended from their last game against the Panthers but it did not seem to upset them.
The first period was very close as both teams went back and forth but the Cougars were able to maintain a good amount of possession throughout the period. It wasn’t until 18:56 into the second period that the Braves would score on the power play. The third period came around with Matt Clark in the penalty box to finish his 10-minute misconduct penalty. The Braves were not able to capitalize at all which resulted in a goal by Kevan McBean making it a tie game. Two minutes later Foster Martin would rip one on Connor Cheyne making it a 2-1 and stunning the Braves. Four minutes later Booker Chacalias went on and pulled some fancy dangles and scored putting the icing on the cake. The Braves would go on to pull their goalie with one minute left in the third but the Cougars were not able to score.
The Cougars now sit at first place with 38 points, Campbell River is behind them with 36 points and Saanich with 35, Nanaimo with 32, Peninsula with 25, Kerry Park with 24, Westshore with 16, Oceanside with 15, and Comox with 1 point.
